Loano. “Memorial Day” will also be celebrated in Loano on Thursday 23 May on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the Capaci and Via D’Amelio massacres which cost the lives of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. The initiative, promoted by the Autonomous Police Union (Sap) in collaboration with the Municipality of Loano and the Falcone institute, will also stop in Savona and Albissola Marina.

Since 1993, the year following the Capaci and Via D’Amelio massacres, the Autonomous Police Union has organized the “Memorial Day” in the month of May, a series of events throughout the national territory to remember all the victims of the mafia, terrorism , of duty and of every form of crime: “We are deeply convinced that keeping the memory of the past alive is the only way to imagine and create a better future for our country and for the community we protect every day. Initiatives such as commemorations, conferences, debates and moments of discussion are planned in the various locations”, recalls the provincial secretary of SAP Roberto Frumento.

“Over the last few years the event has been able to boast the Silver Medal awarded by the President of the Republic and the Patronage of the Presidency of the Council. In the 2017 edition we had the honor of receiving the greeting and blessing of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square during the Sunday Angelus, a sign of a profound sense of sharing the inspiring ideals of the initiative. Furthermore, the Iubilantes association, which has been engaged for years in promoting the Via Micaelica, has recognized the Path of Memory, Truth and Justice among the historical Micaelic paths. During 2023 the event had the honor of seeing an avenue in the municipality of Albisola Marina dedicated to Emanuela Loi, while the students of the ‘Falcone’ high school in Loano published a book dedicated to the revisited story of some real or invented. Finally, the children of the ‘Fabrizio De André’ middle school in Albissola Marina composed and read in three voices a poem dedicated to the celebration”.

The program includes the presentation of the day at 9am in the council room of Palazzo Doria with the interventions of the authorities and the live streaming connection with the children of Via D’Amelio; at 9.45 there will be the presentation of the works of the students of the Falcone institute in Loano. At 10.15 the “Cento Passi” route will begin from Piazza Italia to Giardini Nassiriya, where the bench dedicated to Emanuela Loi has been positioned: the preliminary route will be described through a performance created by the Falcone students. The mayor of Loano Luca Lettieri will speak at 10.30am, followed by the laying of a wreath by the Sap and the blessing of the religious authorities. At 11 we will move to Villa Maria, an asset seized from organized crime, for a moment of reflection. At 11 am the return to the Falcone institute for the end of the ceremony.

The students of the 4D and 4B Graphics classes who participated in the 57.FB project will be present and, again within the Legality Project, the 4C International Relations and Marketing class, who carried out research oriented in particular on the characters who fought the mafia, sometimes to the point of martyrdom. The stories of these figures, who sacrificed everything in the name of truth and justice, were then included in a video.
