For the first time in the history of the Italian National Community in Croatia and Slovenia, on 16 May 2024, in Ljubljana, at the VI meeting of the Commission for National Communities of the State Chamber of the Republic of Slovenia, two Italian Unions were invited”. The president of the Italian Union, Maurizio Tremul, stated this in a statement. “It was the Hon. Roberto Battelli, many legislatures ago, to include among the regular guests at the sessions of the Commission for National Communities, also the Italian Union as a unitary representative body of our National Community. The invitation arrived correctly at the Institution and was not nominative. With the current legislature, from the first session of the Commission in 2022, however, the invitation to the Italian Union is addressed to the name, i.e. the president of the Executive Council of the Italian Union, Marin Corva. A choice made at the behest of the President of the Commission, Horváth Ferenc, evidently not opposed by the vice-president, Felice Žiža. The good practices of the Hon. Battelli, unfortunately, are not taken as an example! After the appointment of the new coordinator of the Italian Union based in Koper, which took place in utmost secrecy on 9 January 2024, by 7 councilors of its Council (Dyego Tuljak, Daniela Ipsa, Alex Zigante, Robi Štule, Jan Pulin, Gianfranco Stancich and Gianfranco Kozlovič), in clear violation of Slovenian legislation, the statutory provisions and the internal rules of the Italian Union, the invitation was initially extended only to the coordinator, Astrid Del Ben (see the invitation for the meeting of 18 April ca) excluding from the guests the president of the Executive Council of the Italian Union, Marin Corva. He was subsequently included among the guests, while the president of the Italian Union continues to be barred from participating, even though he is the legal representative of the UI. The UI will thus be represented by two distinct organizations, Marin Corva for the Italian Union of Rijeka (representing, therefore, only the Italians of Croatia) and Astrid Del Ben for the Italian Union of Koper. Until two years ago, however, there was, rightly, only one Italian Union representing all Italians in the Nationality Commission of the State Chamber of Slovenia! Today the division of the Italian Union is thus sealed. Today the split of the indigenous Italian National Community between that resident in Slovenia and that resident in Croatia is confirmed, despite the fact that the Assembly of the Italian Union has repeatedly reconfirmed, even in its last session on 27 March 2024, the unity of the Italian Union and the unity of the Italian National Community”, is noted in the statement from the president of the Italian Union, Maurizio Tremul.
