Valentin Paret-Peintre attacks and takes the tenth stage

We return to the streets of the Bel Paese, after the first day of break. On Sunday, the ninth stage of this 107th Giro d’Italia was won by Olav Kooij, who however will not be at the starting line today. It starts from Pompeii, with the finish line in Bocca della Selva: 141.9 km, with another uphill finish.

Attack after attack at the start of the Giro d’Italia: three come out on top

At the start of this tenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2024 there are two who immediately take the initiative: Quinten Hermans and Simon Clarke. The two gain almost 20″, but they are not left too much room for maneuver by the group. Alessandro De Marchi joins the leading duo: the three try another escape. With 100 km to go, the three leaders have a 1 minute lead over another small group in pursuit, made up of around ten runners, including Pippo Ganna. The fleeing trio arrives on the Arpaia Flying Line: Alessandro De Marchi passes first, while Hermans breaks away.

A “wide” breakaway, GPM in Geschke

Clarke and De Marchi continue their escape and return to putting a 1′ lead between themselves and their pursuers, who however, as the kilometers pass, fall back and regroup the escape. Now they have become around 26: among them many protagonists of this Giro d’Italia, such as Zana, Fiorelli, Caruso, Alaphilippe, Bardet, Schachmann and others. When approaching the Camposauro GPM there is an almost 3 minute lead, and on the GPM it is Simon Geschke who passes first. The climbs begin to thin out the group.

Flying finish line to Fiorelli, Tratnik animates the escape

The Intergiro Flying Finish Line bears the name of Filippo Fiorelli, but it is Tratnik, Bagioli and Bardet who this time try to take the initiative and launch an attack. It is precisely the Visma rider who takes the lead: the pink jersey group is 5’25” with 30 km to go. The Slovenian continues his solitary action and takes 30″ from the first pursuers, while 1’15” on a second group of pursuers.

The tenth stage of the Giro d’Italia belongs to Valentin Paret-Peintre

As we enter the final 10km of the stage, Tratnik maintains an almost 1′ lead over his first pursuers, Paret-Peintre and Bardet. The two Frenchmen, working together, managed to nibble away precious seconds from the Slovenian, while behind Pozzovivo made a difficult comeback. Paret-Peintre himself, when there are less than 3 km to go, seems to launch the decisive attack: Bardet gives up, while the standard bearer of the Decathlon Ag2R La Difesa takes and overtakes Tratnik, and there are 2 km to go. Bardet overtakes Tratnik, but Paret-Peintre now seems uncatchable. Behind, in the pink jersey group, Tiberi wants to gain positions for the general. It is therefore, alone, Valentin Paret-Peintre to take a great victory in this tenth stage.
