For the students of four fifth classes of the “Einaudi” and “Vergani” high schools, lessons took place on Friday 3 and Tuesday 7 May in a truly special context. Thanks to the collaboration between the Observatory for road safety education of the Emilia Romagna Region and the provincial command of the Carabinieri of Ferrara, the doors of the ‘Carmine Della Sala’ barracks have opened for young students. The objective of the day was to increase young people’s awareness of the risks deriving from adopting incorrect behaviors when driving vehicles, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The meeting, which aroused the interest and curiosity of the students, began at the respective institutes with a lesson conducted by an official psychologist, focused on the psycho-physical deficit caused by the abuse of alcohol and the intake of substances psychotropic substances, and by the Commander of the Radiomobile section of the Ferrara Company who instead illustrated the consequences, from a criminal and administrative point of view, in the event that a motorist is caught driving under the influence of the aforementioned substances. The morning then continued in the square of the ‘Carmine Della Sala’ barracks where, after having witnessed the demonstration by the staff of the Radiomobile Section of how to run a “checkpoint”, the boys were able to put themselves in the shoes of a real policeman simulating a first-person traffic control. Obviously there was no lack of in-depth information on the breathalyser and its functioning, before concluding the day as a policeman with the possibility of seeing up close the vehicles in use at the Ferrara Radiomobile. The initiative, which attracted great interest, not only made it possible to raise awareness among young students on the topic of road safety, but was also an opportunity to raise awareness of the role of the policeman by introducing young people to a profession that is as delicate as it is full of satisfactions.
