Brazil flood: increasingly dramatic toll

The devastating toll continues to rise dramatically flood which hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the south of Brazil. According to the latest updates provided by the Civil Protection, the death toll has risen to at least 75. The number of missing people has also increased, rising to 103while over 95,700 people had to leave their homes due to the flooding.

The damage recorded in 332 of the 496 municipalities in the state is incalculable. Almost half a million homes are without electricity and 839 thousand homes are left without water. Many smaller towns are isolated due to traffic disruption on 113 roads. The capital Porto Alegre is completely submerged by the waters of the Guaiba river which flooded yesterday afternoon. The entire productive sector of the State – the country’s fourth largest economy – is devastated.
