At least 24 people have died after parting a highway collapsed due to heavy rains in the province of Guangdong, southern China, state media reported. Guangdong has been hit by thunderstorms in recent weeks, with severe flooding and landslides in some areas.
The rainfall was much more violent than what is usually recorded at this time of year.
State news agency Xinhua reported that a stretch of road between the city of Meizhou and Dabu county in Guangdong province collapsed last night. According to Xinhua, 20 vehicles and 54 people were involved in the accident.
The authorities sent around 500 people to the scene to help with rescue operations, CCTV reported. The causes of the collapse are unknown. In recent weeks the province of Guangdong has been hit by a series of violent weather events, from deadly floods to a tornado.
