8.40 PM DIFFICULT SITUATION BETWEEN GESSATE AND BELLINZAGO DUE TO THE FLOOD – The weather is gradually improving in the province of Milan but the situation is serious between Gessate and Bellinzago due to the flood. In some points the water exceeds one meter in height and the firefighters had to intervene with amphibious vehicles to rescue several people. Meanwhile, strong storms continue to hit eastern Lombardy, especially the Mantua, Emilia Romagna and Triveneto. Ravenna is under a strong storm as are Verona and Legnago. After the 200mm that fell between Piedmont and Lombardy there are now peaks of 140mm in Veneto in the Vicenza area.

6.30 PM – GESSATE FLOOD – Emergency situation in the metropolitan city of Milan, even Gessate ends up underwater.

UPDATE 4.20 PM. LODI, THE SILLARO FLOODS. In the Lodi area, near Borgetto, the Sillaro canal also flooded. In the Lodi area, rainfall accumulations reached 140mm in some areas, with water invading the countryside, forcing the closure of many roads.

UPDATE 3.25 PM. HALF OF LOMBARDY UNDER WATER. Between Lodigiano, Milanese, western Bergamasco, Brianza, Comasco and Lecchese, over 120mm of rain fell widely, but with local peaks close to 200mm. in about 30% of the regional territory in 15 hours it rained as much as the entire month of May, in some cases even double. Numerous floods and critical issues, while the Lambro overflows in several places between Brianza and Milanese.

In Milan today is one of the rainiest May days in the last 170 years: between 1850 and 1997 the record in Milan Brera was 98mm recorded in May 1990. And it’s not over: other showers and thunderstorms, including intense ones expected at least until the end of Thursday.

UPDATE 2.45 PM. FLOODED ROADS IN BRIANZA. Critical situation in Monza and Brianza where the rain and storms led the rainfall accumulations to locally exceed 100mm. The level of the Lambro at the Peregallo hydrometer is around two meters and has overflowed in some points only in the Monza Park. The roads are currently passable except for the Via Lario underpass, closed to traffic in both directions due to flooding (Source Monza Today)

UPDATE 12.45 PM. EXCEPTIONAL ACCUMULATIONS, AMONG THE RAINIEST MAY DAYS IN THE LAST 170 YEARS. This is an exceptional event as it is of considerable significance for Lombardy, with rainfall accumulations of up to 120-130mm not localized, but over a very large area that extends from the Lodi area to Milanese, Brianza, Comasco and Varesotto. To frame the event, just think that from 1850 to 1997 the daily rainfall record in May at the Milan Brera station was 98mm in 1990. It is therefore certainly one of the rainiest May days ever recorded in the last 170 years.

UPDATE 12.30 PM. TRAFFIC IN MILAN, FLOODING THE LAMBRO. The Milan ATM informs that due to bad weather and flooding ‘Buses 45, 66 and 88/ which pass through Via Vittorini are diverted due to the flooding of the road, in the Ponte Lambro area and, again on the transport lines On the surface, tram lines 2,3 and 9 are interrupted due to flooding of interchanges in other areas of the city. There are also critical issues between the Milan Forlanini and Pioltello stations and on the motorway sections towards Novara and Varese.

UPDATE 12PM. UP TO 130MM IN THE MILAN AREA. It continues to rain intensely in the Milan area and in some areas the rain gauge has reached 130mm of accumulation, as reported by the data from the Vimercate station, in the eastern hinterland. Just to the south, the 120mm of Mombretto di Mediglia is worth mentioning, while outside the province, between Comasco and Varesotto, peaks of 110/120mm are reached. Widespread flooding has been reported in Ponte Lambro, a neighborhood in the south-east of Milan, after the intense rains of the last few hours. The firefighters and civil protection are at work, also with the aid of rubber dinghies, to provide assistance to the people left isolated in the condominiums in the area, in particular the elderly and disabled, due to the large quantity of water that has invaded the streets.

Milan Ponte Lambro:

UPDATE 11AM. THE SEVESO FLOOD TANK OPEN. The incessant rains that are affecting the Lombardy capital are causing the levels of the waterways to rise, so much so that the municipal authorities have opened the Seveso flood prevention tank. Other critical issues are reported in the city, due to flooding and fallen trees, one of which in Via Caracciolo which crushed some parked cars.

SITUATION 9AM, FIRST FLOODINGS AND CRITICAL ISSUE. The strong disturbance that is affecting Northern Italy and in particular Lombardy is giving rise to severe bad weather conditions also in Milan, where rainfall accumulations in some areas of the hinterland have exceeded 90mm, with peaks of over 70mm in the city. The rains, thunderstorms and cloudbursts intensified significantly during the night and the first ones occurred at dawn problems with the Seveso and Lambro which flow within the city territory, after having reached the level of attention.

The first flooding and critical issues are reported: cars stuck in underpasses but above all problems with subway and railway circulation. Flooding affects several metro stations, also in the Duomo area, with related closures. According to what is also reported Milanotoday there are some consequences, not only on local transport in Milan with ATM vehicles diverted, but also on the railway system with trains suspended or cancelled. Railway traffic suspended between Pioltello and Milan Porta Vittoria from 7am due to adverse weather conditions.

The intensity of the bad weather is truly significant, if not exceptional: to frame the event it is enough to think that from 1850 to 1997 the daily rainfall record in May of the Milan Brera station was 98mm in 1990. At the moment, in much of the Milanese area, peaks of over 80-90mm are recorded and it continues to rain with intensity; it is therefore presumable that by the end of the day the 100mm will be exceeded.

SEVERE BAD WEATHER IN THE NEXT HOURS, PAY EXTREME ATTENTION. Rain and showers, including thunderstorms, are expected in Milan and its hinterland, which may continue to be very intense or downpour until early afternoon; partial attenuation of precipitation between mid-afternoon and evening, although still present. Possible further contributions of over 50-80mm for overall accumulations which in the hinterland may even exceed 150mm. In this context, therefore, the risk of further flooding, critical issues and inconveniences remains real, with possible flooding of Lambro and Seveso. Thursday will see a lull in bad weather in the morning, probably followed by a resurgence of instability in the afternoon with new storms, even if short-lived.
