Memory of the Historic Meeting of 1964

Yesterday, 28 April 2024, the Pontiff visited the Vatican pavilion at the Venice Biennale. During the event, he recalled the historic meeting of May 7, 1964 in the Sistine Chapel, where Pope Paul VI outlined the foundations of an “authentic alliance” between the Church and contemporary artists.

The “Lapilli” exhibition by Sara Munari

Today I would like to bring to your attention the exhibition “Lapilli” by Sara Munari, set up at the Paolo VI Collections for contemporary art. Curated by M. Paderni and A. Franchi, this exhibition is the result of Munari’s victory at the fourth edition of the Paolo VI Prize for contemporary art in 2023.

The exhibition explores the theme of volcanic eruptions and their impact on religion and humanity. Through a mix of photographs, fabrics and other various materials, Munari reflects on the power of nature and its consequences on the affected communities.

The Creative Path of Sara Munari

From 2019 to 2023, Munari traveled in Europe visiting volcanic regions to collect materials which he then transformed into visual narratives. These stories range from ancient myths to scientific documentation of the devastating force of volcanoes.

The Impact of Volcanoes on Religious Beliefs

Munari delves into how volcanoes have influenced not only the physical landscape but also the spiritual beliefs of populations. For example, in Greek and Roman cultures they were considered divine manifestations, while in Christianity they could be seen as works of Satan or divine signs.
