Suviana explosion, the role of the Emergency System and 118

In the frenetic hours following the explosion of the hydroelectric power plant on Lake Suviana, the contribution of the Emergency System and 118 was fundamental, as it managed to carry out emergency operations while maintaining high attention to routine operations

On the occasion of the accident in the Bargi hydroelectric power plant, which caused seven victims on the artificial lake of Suvianain the Bologna area, the intervention of the Emergency System and the 118 of the Bologna Local Health Authority was fundamental.

How the Emergency System responded to the Suviana event
The work of the emergency system was explored in depth on 16 and 17 April during the Bologna school of the emergency system at a conference with the leading experts in the management of intra- and extra-hospital trauma to take stock of the goals achieved and the future of the treatment. Arrived at XVIII editionthe congress again this year Trauma: UpDate and Organizationon 16 and 17 April, brought together in Bologna the top experts in intra- and extra-hospital management of the traumacoordinated by the clinicians of the Trauma Center of the metropolitan area which is based inMajor Hospitalwhich for years has been promoting and stimulating training, clinical innovation and research: from pre-hospital care tohelicopter rescue, up to the analysis of data from the largest Italian study group on intensive care, in collaboration with the Mario Negri IRCCS Pharmacological Research Institute. In the two-day conference, reference to the last one could not be missed maxi-emergency resulting from the explosion at the hydroelectric plant of Bargion the artificial lake of Suviana.

The vehicles used for the Suviana event
In fact, last April 9th, the Operations Center 118 Emilia Est was activated by the Carabinieri of the Municipality of Vergato, in response to a call 112 carried out by an eyewitness present at the scene of the tragedy. Once the dynamics of the accident were understood, it was traced back to the explosion of a generator set resulting in a fire which had caused several injuries with serious burns, all the bodies responsible for the type of event were activated and a progressively increasing number of vehicles and professionals were brought together on site to guarantee all possible rescue services. Although the number of people involved was not initially known for certain, they were deployed four medical helicopters (elibologna, elipavullo, eliravenna to which was added a helicopter from the 118 of Tuscany) who transported all the most serious codes (four codes 3 intubated and ventilated plus one code 2) to the hospitals equipped with burn centers in Cesena, Parma and Pisa as well as at the Sant’Orsola Polyclinic. In addition to the air ambulance, they were made available two area medical vehicleswho alternated for over twenty-four hours, first to provide assistance to the wounded and, in a second moment, to ascertain the victims.

They also intervened five ambulances with nurses, for the precious task of connecting and transporting medical teams and the injured between the location of the event and the helicopter landing site; a vehicle dedicated to major emergencies with a driver, rescuer and nurse on board for logistical/health support from the first hour, and a vehicle with a coordinator of the Operations Center 118 Emilia Est for on-site coordination actions and the interface with the crisis unit.

Managing the rest of the routine work
While all the emergency vehicles rushed to the scene, the anticipatory action of scouting of available beds (in the Region and outside the Region), coordinated by Doctor Link on duty 118EE Operations Center in collaboration with the other 118 power plants Parma, Florence and of theLocal health authority Romagna. The management of the accident which occurred on 9 April by the Emergency and 118 professionals of the Bologna Local Health Authority was the result of the maturity and experience achieved by an entire system.

On that occasion, the synergy with all the bodies involved was also essential but not to be taken for granted: from Policeat the Civil protection and, first of all, i Fire fighters who worked in extreme conditions for the search and first aid until the last missing person. All this, while the routine and urgent tasks continued requests for help every day, which reached the 118 Operations Center. The response to these routine interventions was made possible thanks to the extraordinary commitment of all the non-operational professionals in the Suviana area.
