Erasmus student invested in SS100, Mateo’s death case archived

No one was responsible for the death of Mateo Corras, the Spanish student who died on the night between 4 and 5 February last year after being hit by a car while walking along state road 100 in the Casamassima area. The judge for preliminary investigations of the Court of Bari Ilaria Casu accepted the request for dismissal made by the public prosecutor against the driver of the vehicle: the reasoning followed by the prosecutor’s office, on the basis of technical advice, was that the driver had certainly exceeded the speed limit but even if he had proceeded more slowly he would still have hit the pedestrian. A belief that the boy’s family struggles to accept, in the belief that there are still too many dark points in the story.

The young man was attending Erasmus in Belgium and had decided to come to Italy for a trip with some friends: the morning after the accident he was supposed to take the plane to return to Spain. But after a party, which he took part in together with his group, Mateo decides to leave, walking along the highway at 2.30 in the morning. His parents cannot understand where he was going, they say the reconstruction of what happened should have been more precise. The student initially walked in the center of the road, along the center line between the two lanes, and then moved close to the guard rail. The impact with a passing car would have been inevitable. the darkness, the fact that he was dressed in dark clothes then contributed – according to the investigating judge – to the tragedy.
