Two power lines in the Saline Reserve of Trapani and Paceco have been eliminated

The two “Birgi” and “Verderame” power lines that crossed the Saline di Trapani and Paceco Regional Nature Reserve were eliminated.

The operation, conducted by WWF Italy in collaboration with E-Distribuzione, made it possible to remove a potential danger for thousands of migratory birds that cross this wetland of international importance every year. The power lines, in fact, represented a risk of collision and electrocution for various species, including pink flamingos, symbol of the Reserve.

The elimination of power lines is among the actions envisaged to achieve the objectives of protecting the Reserve, recognized as a Ramsar and Natura 2000 site. WWF Italy, the managing body of the protected area, has always called for intervention to protect the avifauna and the unique habitat of the Saline.

E-Distribuzione, sensitive to environmental protection issues, has actively collaborated with the WWF to find a sustainable solution. The company has built two new underground electricity lines outside the Reserve, thus guaranteeing the continuity of the electricity service in the area without compromising the ecosystem.

The operation conducted in the Trapani and Paceco Saline Nature Reserve represents a model to follow for the protection of the environment and biodiversity in similar contexts, such as for example in Stagnone di Marsala Reserve, where a process of anthropization has been underway for years, due to kiting and kiosk farming.
