Seven will soon go out coal-fired power plants in Germany.
The facilities lignite – one of the most polluting fossil sources – they should have closed long agobut the government had chosen to keep them running to ensure energy security after the outbreak of war in Ukraineto avoid affecting gas reserves.
The crisis phase is therefore over, according to the German federal agency that regulates electricity supply.
The coal-fired power plants, which Germany had kept as a reserve, can therefore be decommissioned, given that the gas reserves today I’m at 65% of overall capacity, a record level compared to recent years.
It is, in fact, a return tol 2023, when electricity from coal plants had been used very little. Specifically, generation from lignite power plants had fallen to its lowest level since 1963while that of anthracite power plants was at its lowest levels since 1955.
According to data from the Fraunhofer Institute, overall last year saw coal-fired power plants in Germany a reduction in output by almost 1/3, equal to -48 TWhwhile the share of renewables in net national electricity production it grew by 7.2% compared to 2022, reaching almost 60% of the total (260 TWh).
