1090 – First known mention, in a deed of donation, of the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena.
1139 – Officialization of the Templar Order.
1461 – Wars of the Roses: Battle of Towton. Edward of York overthrows Queen Margaret and becomes King Edward IV of England
1516 – The Serenissima Republic of Venice decides on the establishment of the ghetto, the first in Europe, where Venetian Jews were forced to reside.
1517 – The Irpinia earthquake causes damage, collapses and dozens (or perhaps hundreds) of victims.
1638 – Swedish settlers establish the first settlement in Delaware, naming it New Sweden
1871 – The Royal Albert Hall opens
1912 – Robert Falcon Scott at the South Pole, writes the last entry in the notebook: eight months later a rescue expedition finds his body.
1918 – In the sky over Ponte di Piave, pilot Marshal Ernesto Cabruna from Tortona faces eleven enemy planes alone, shoots down the patrol leader and disperses the remainder.
1941 – World War II: the Battle of Cape Matapan ends (it had begun on March 27)
1951 – Rosenberg Case: Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are accused of conspiracy and espionage
1971 – For the killing of actress Sharon Tate, the death penalty was requested (in Los Angeles, California) for Charles Manson and three of his followers
1973 – Vietnam War: the last American soldiers leave Saigon, South Vietnam. In total the dead amount to 930,000 North Vietnamese, 180,000 South Vietnamese and 45,000 Americans
1993 – Édouard Balladur becomes Prime Minister of France
2004 – Seven former Iron Curtain countries join NATO: Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia
2017 – The United Kingdom invokes Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, formally initiating Brexit
