Tragedy yesterday afternoon on the street Old Pontina to Ardea where one died girl, Pietra Regina, aged seven and a half in the collision between three cars. Next to her, her five-year-old brother was injured and hospitalized at Bambino Gesù. His life was not in danger. The two children were traveling in child seats in the back seat of the Mercedes A-Class driven by their mother. The sedan was traveling along the provincial road towards Aprilia. A few more hundred meters and they would have arrived home. Instead, another Mercedes 220 hit them head-on. The little girl’s condition immediately appeared desperate. The Ares 118 doctors and colleagues from the air ambulance, which landed close to the road, immediately intervened on site. Every attempt to save the little girl was in vain. The little girl died a few minutes after the terrible impact. The mother was in shock and needed care from the healthcare staff. The father of the children was desperate and notified by the police – including the Carabinieri on site – who rushed to his son’s bedside. The local police of Ardea took care of carrying out the investigations and reconstructing the dynamics of the accident.

THE DYNAMICS

From an initial reconstruction, yet to be confirmed, a Lancia Libra driven by a 49-year-old Roman, and with two other children between eight and 10 years old on board who fortunately escaped unharmed from the accident, came from Via della Pescarella and would have taken the Pontina Vecchia without respecting the stop sign, even though the horizontal signs at the intersection are clearly visible. At that moment the Mercedes 220 arrived on the provincial road driven by a man born in 1949 in the Netherlands. The two cars collided and in the collision the man driving the sedan lost control of the car, invading the oncoming lane and ending up head-on against the other Mercedes in which the mother and two children were travelling, who had almost reached home. The impact was devastating. The two seats on which the little brothers were sitting were completely destroyed. The firefighters of Pomezia, the Carabinieri of Ardea also intervened on site to manage the roads and volunteers from the Airone civil protection to support them.

A dramatic scene that the rescue teams saw before their eyes. The sedan where the children were completely crumpled and reduced to a pile of sheet metal. The other with the hood destroyed. The man driving was slightly injured as was the driver of the Lancia. The traffic police officers have not ruled out anything among the causes of the frontal impact. Not even high speed. Meanwhile, the Velletri prosecutor’s office has opened a file to establish responsibility for the tragedy. The cars were seized, while the two men at the wheel of the Mercedes and the Lancia were taken to hospital to undergo alcohol and drug tests, the results of which should be released today. After yesterday afternoon’s tragedy, Pontina Vecchia is back in the spotlight due to its dangerousness. In the last year, four people have died on the provincial road. Two this month alone.

PREVIOUS

Last March 15th the one who lost his life was Adriano Macellari, 70 years old next October, resident of Aprilia, retired carabiniere. Valentino Restivo, 37, who worked as a courier, died in July. A year ago Alessio Bottiglieri, 25 years old, was thrown from his motorbike to the ground after a very violent impact with a Mercedes. A cursed road, with only one lane in each direction, with dangerous at-grade intersections, with bad asphalt in several places, characterized by long straights where the fifty hour limit is almost never respected.
