The oil from the Capaci memory garden used for the Chrism mass

Was donated to the dioceses of the province of Perugia by the State Police

Perugia, 28 March 2024 – Tuesday afternoon, the Police Commissioner of the Province of Perugia Fausto Lamparelli, 32 years after the massacres of Capaci and Via D’Amelio, remembered the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the policemen of their escorts and those who lost their lives in the fight against the mafia, with an initiative – which involves all the police stations in Italy – with a high symbolic value.

Accompanied by a representative of the staff, the Quaestor went to the headquarters of the Archbishopric for a meeting with Monsignor Ivan Maffeis, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Diocese of Perugia – Città della Pieve during which he gave the Archbishop a vial containing the oil produced by the “Quarto-Savona 15” Association, which takes its name from the radio acronym used by the State Police crew escorting Judge Giovanni Falcone.

In fact, in the place where the attack on 23 May 1992 took place, near the Capaci motorway junction where the three escort agents – Vito Schifani, Antonio Montinaro and Rocco Dicillo – and the magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Francesca Morvillo were killed, stands a garden where olive trees have been planted, each dedicated to a representative of the institutions who fell at the hands of the mafia.

This year too, the Association collected the olives produced by the trees, obtaining the oil which was donated so that the fruit born from the land bathed in the blood of those who fell in the fight against the mafia can be a symbol of redemption for the territory, representing the victory of good over evil. The oil will be consecrated during Holy Week and used as Holy Oil for liturgical celebrations.

Archbishop Maffeis thanked the Quaestor for the precious gift and underlined that the precious oil, as per tradition, will be combined with the essence of bergamot for the creation of the “Chrism”, the oil consecrated by the Bishop in the Holy Thursday Mass , used in the administration of the sacraments of Confirmation, Holy Orders and the Anointing of the Sick, as well as in the rite of Baptism.

The bishop then expressed appreciation for the initiative as well as the closeness to all the police forces and in particular to the State Police for the commitment they make every day for the safety of citizens.

The initiative was also proposed at the provincial level where the officials and staff of the police stations of Spoleto, Foligno and Città di Castello donated to the Bishops of the Dioceses of Assisi – Nocera Umbra – Gualdo Tadino and Foligno; of the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia; of the Diocese of Città di Castello the oil produced by the “Quarto-Savona 15” Association.
