The scene in Piazza Vittorio is tragic: a homeless man who feels ill in his sleep and, without realizing it, slips between the backrest and the seat of a bench, getting stuck. “Come, there is a man who is ill”. The local police officers were alerted this morning by a couple of French tourists who were walking through the gardens of the square and found the man locked inside the iron bench.
The homeless man, who was in a semi-conscious state, was bleeding from his mouth. It is not clear whether he had fallen asleep before his illness. But faced with the fear of internal bleeding, the police sent an ambulance to the scene. The doctors immediately approached the man, but he could not be helped. The firefighters freed him by dismantling the plank of the bench and letting him out.
Then they put the bench back in its place. At that point the homeless man, once free, left in an ambulance for medical treatment. The rescue was filmed on the phone by passers-by who then shared the video on social media: “I thought I had seen them all – says a man in the video – but I missed one person stuck in a bench”.
