Ahdb: EU pork prices rise again due to production decline in 2023

European pork prices, second an analysis by Ahdb, fell by 12 p/kg (pence per kilo) on average in the first five weeks, due to weak seasonal demand. However, over the next six weeks they recovered, reaching an average of 185.63 p/kg. An increase linked to the increase in demand combined with the continuous narrowing of supply.

The 2023 production of pig meat in the EU stood at 20.6 million tonnes: a decline of 7% year-on-year, driven by a reduced number of slaughters (also decreased by 7% on an annual basis). These are the lowest volume levels recorded in ten years; the Commission forecasts a further annual decline of around 1% between now and 2035. As of December 2023, the total pig population in the 27 EU countries stood at 133.6 million heads.

EU pork exports (including offal) stood at 3.90 million tonnes, a sharp year-on-year decline. “Much of this decline can be attributed to production losses, although some products may have lost key destinations due to increased global competition”, they explain from Ahdb. Imports, however, totaled 146,800 tonnes in 2023.
