Skoda Elroq: we drove it in preview

WHAT WE KNOW – We drove the pre-production version of the new electric crossover Skoda Elorqwhich in these photos and in the video below you still see camouflaged. The car is already defined but still the subject of improvements in the interior details and in the tuning of the dynamic behavior. In the meantime, however, we can anticipate many of its characteristics with respect to the official presentation of the car scheduled for October 2024 and its arrival in dealerships in March 2025with prices starting from approx 40.000 euro.

DERIVES FROM ENYAQ – Among the data of the Skoda Elorq that the house has already released are the dimensions. This crossover is at 449 cm, making it the smallest of the 100% electric ones offered by the Volkswagen group (of which Skoda is part). The height is 165 cm while the width is 188 cm. The Skoda Elroq is built on the MEB platform developed by the Volkswagen Group exclusively for electric vehicles. In particular, the Skoda Elroq is closely derived from the larger Enyaq, which, with 465 cm from bumper to bumper, is 16 cm longer. The wheelbase of 277 cm, however, remains unchanged, which also guarantees the Elroq lots of space for passengers. The interior of the Skoda Elroq has not yet been revealed, but it will certainly be very similar to that of the larger Enyaq. The declared capacity of the trunk: 470 litres with the sofa in use, which corresponds to 1,580 litres when folded.

WIDE CHOICE – The Skoda Elroq it will be offered in four versions. Those with the rear electric motor (like the traction) have 170 HP and a 52 kWh net battery (i.e. those that can actually be used), credited for 350 km of travel, or 204 HP (59 kWh the “battery” and 390 km autonomy). The two most powerful with the 77 kWh battery have 286 HP (560 km range) or for the 4×4 with a second engine at the front, 299 HP (550 km declared distance). For the rechargethe batteries accept up to 11 kW in alternating current (an average value) which require between six and eight hours for complete regeneration, or 175 kW in direct current: according to the manufacturer in less than 30 minutes you can go from 10 % to 80% efficiency.

DISGUISED YES BUT NOT TOO MUCH – Despite the green film that covers the bodywork, looking at it carefully you can understand many aspects of the design Skoda ElroqThe shapes remain angular like those of the Skodas we know, the headlights also maintain a triangular shape. The news is in front. The winged arrow logo is replaced by the full Skoda logo. And the traditional grille with the eye-catching glossy frame disappears to make way for a more modern cover, presumably bright, and connected to the headlights. These remain on two levels as in today’s Skodas, with thin daytime running lights at the top and larger, real headlights at the bottom.

HOW IS IT GOING – In the short test on urban roads we drove the Skoda Elroq 286 HP, still subject to further refinements in road behavior. We can, however, anticipate that, despite the considerable power and the decisive (but not abrupt) acceleration, this Skoda Elroq is not a sports car but a crossover attentive to comfort. Equipped with generous 19″ wheels and rather soft suspensions, it handled well almost all the bumps and bumps along the test route, transmitting a few too many jolts only on the deepest potholes. Despite some body roll, the Skoda Elroq seemed enough to us easy to handle. The steering calibration is light, but not excessively so, and it isn’t even too much geared. Well modulated i brakes and with the levers behind the steering wheel you can adjust the regenerative braking on three levels (when slowing down, it recharges the battery). However, the “one pedal”, useful in traffic, where the slowdown is so powerful that it stops the car without pressing the brake. For a detailed driving impression, however, we refer you to the launch of the final Skoda Elroq, when we will be able to drive it again.
