The Reno 12 confirms this, as they are the first smartphones to integrate various functions related to artificial intelligence within the ColorOS operating system, despite not being top of the range. The path therefore appears to be mapped out, in the near future AI will arrive on many Oppo smartphonesand already from this first implementation the potential that can be seen is very interesting.
An intelligent operating system

Billy Zhang’s words leave little room for doubt about the future of artificial intelligence according to Oppo, but how was it integrated into the Reno 12? Oppo could have done its homework and done a simple AI washing but that wasn’t the case, because ColorOS is changing precisely to leave more space for services related to artificial intelligence. But let’s proceed in order and try to understand what Oppo smartphones offer in this area, starting with imaging. AI has been used for years to optimize images taken with smartphone cameras, they could never have achieved this quality without it. Today, however, it is possible to go even further, for example with AI Eraser 2.0, a technology that is used to eliminate unwanted elements in a photo. It has been trained with billions of images to effectively remove people and objects – basically anything you don’t want to find in a photo.
To do this, simply circle the object to be removed with your finger, even approximately, so that the software can immediately interpret what you want to delete. There is also an option in the editor that recognizes all the people in a photo without human intervention, eliminating them in one fell swoop.

Then there are AI Clear Face and AI Best Face functions, used to optimize group shots. The first serves to avoid the classic micro blur that can be seen in photos with multiple people, when one of the subjects does not remain completely still. AI Clear Face works with images with at least three people portrayed and up to a maximum of ten and is used to improve the detail and definition of faces, for a process that is carried out entirely on the device, without sending data to the cloud.
AI Best Faces, on the other hand, carries out an even more complex task and eliminates a very annoying defect in group photos, namely closed eyes.

There is also room for generative AI thanks to theAI Studio application. It is not available in Italy for now but should arrive in August on compatible Oppo smartphones. By uploading your own photo to the app, AI Studio is able to generate a new image from pre-established prompts, which can be used as an avatar or profile photo. You can transform yourself into a cowboy as well as a character from a science fiction series, all with very different styles from each other. The final result is convincing and can create truly unique images.
What we have described is just the tip of the iceberg, because as we were saying, AI is deeply integrated into the operating system, thanks mainly to AI Toolbox. With a swipe you can call up a sidebar that offers personalized suggestions on which AI functions to use, based on what you are doing.
This greatly simplifies the use of AI in the smartphone, because it always suggests the best option available based on the context of use. A practical example is given by AI Writer, which creates texts for posts to be published on social networks. AI Toolbox offers it only if you are inside applications like Facebook or Instagram, in fact the system understands what you are doing and proposes the most suitable function for the purpose, without human intervention.
The same thing happens for AI Speak e Ai Summarywhich are suggested when using a web browser. The first is able to understand a text and read it while the second can summarize an article or a Wikipedia page, making the use of the contents faster.
Finally there is the smart recorder, useful for example for students or journalists. Once a conversation has been recorded, it can be converted into text complete with a summary and key points of the speech. This function is currently only available in Chinese, English and Hindi and supports a maximum of 45,000 characters, but new languages and features will be made available in future software releases.
In short, we are only at the beginning of Oppo’s AI revolution, but it is already possible to see the potential and above all the integration with the operating system. AI Toolbox is a great ideathe AI is of little use if it is difficult to find inside the phone, the contextual suggestions given by this bar really make the difference and make the AI much easier to use, both on the current Reno 12 and in the next smartphones in coming from Oppo in the next few months.
