Until now, one of the main shortcomings related to the management of external disks on iPad was the one relating to the possibility of carrying out the formatting of the external disks. With the advent of iPadOS 18now in the hands of the developers and in a few months usable by everyone, however, will only be a bad memory.
iPadOS 18 allows you to format external disks
From the analysis of beta 2 of iPadOS 18 which was recently released, we learn that, for the first time ever, it becomes possible to format an external disk on the iPad using theapp Filethe default file manager for mobile devices Applewhich contributes to making the Cupertino giant’s tablet decidedly more versatile for those who often use external disks and equally frequently need to format them, such as video makers.
The formats of file system available are the same ones that Disk Utility offers on the Mac, that is: APFS (it is a format optimized for Flash/SSD storage that is used on recent Macs, but can also be used on older systems with traditional HDD drives and directly connected external storage), ExFAT (to be chosen if the external disk is also used in a Windows environment) e MS-DOS (FAT) (use for Windows volumes larger than 32 GB).
Furthermore, there is disk support encrypted and the option that stands out uppercase/lowercase.
Unfortunately, more advanced options are missing, such as those available on macOS capable of repairing disks in case of problems, but it is not excluded that they could be implemented in the future.
