Honor 200 Pro review

Honor 200 Pro is a smartphone that plays (almost) all its cards with the quality of the portraits that its camera can capture, the result of a prestigious collaboration with a Parisian photography studio.

Honor 200 Pro review

Honor 200 Pro is one of three smartphones in the family, which differ in technological equipment and price; the model that distances itself the most is the least expensive one, which in addition to a lighter equipment, also has a completely different design.

We used the Honor 200 Pro for a few weeks and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of its portraits; the other details, however, if we exclude the battery, are completely ordinary and this evaluation generates some doubts about the price positioning.

PRO

  • Exceptional portrait photos
  • Battery life
  • Low weight

AGAINST

  • Questionable design
  • Very high price

The design of Honor 200 Pro collects the legacy of the previous model, compared to which however it modifies the appearance of the main photographic compartment, which was previously divided into two circular blocks, but today consists of a single elliptical block.

This is a completely subjective element, so difficult to evaluate, but in all sincerity it left us a little perplexed. Honor’s idea was to take the symmetrical shapes of a building in Barcelona, the result is that of an elliptical block that has a silver frame, which on the contrary seems completely asymmetrical.

In our opinion, among the merits of Honor 200 Pro we cannot include the quality of its shapes, but on the other hand we have several interesting elements, such as the weighing less than 200 grams and the 6.78″ OLED displaywith remarkable fluidity and an impressive peak brightness.

The average brightness, however, is completely normal, in line with many other mid-range products on the market. The refresh rate is adjusted in 3 different steps: Dynamic, High And Standard. In practice, 60 Hz, 120 Hz, or a mode that switches from one level to another depending on how you use the phone.

The screen is “semi-curved”, with a perfectly symmetrical construction with the back, which can be of 3 different colors, we are trying the most “normal” one, a matte black which has the great advantage of not picking up fingerprints.

The structure of Honor 200 Pro is equipped with a IP65 certificationfor resistance to water and dust: they are there two stereo speakerswhich reproduce sounds at a volume that can be very high.

The technical data sheet of Honor 200 Pro then includes a infrared sensor to replace remote controls, the bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 6L’NFC and compatibility with different positioning systems. Overall, a good technical sheet, typical of mid-range smartphones that are offered on the market.

Hardware and performance

VOTE: 7

The main hardware of the Honor 200 Pro is of a good standard: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor it is among the best that can be found today, while the memory allocation is 12 GB of RAM And 512 GB of internal memory.

These are excellent details, which guarantee good performance: for precision, we underline that in other markets you can reach 16 GB of RAM and even 1 TB of internal memory.

Excellent technical data sheet, then, but it is worth remembering that POCO F6 it offers the same processor for 499 euros, over 30% less than the official positioning of Honor 200 Pro. It is an important point of reference to be able to adequately evaluate its price.

If we talk about camera, Honor 200 Pro can really compete with anyone, not only for portraits, but also for the general quality of shots, including night shots. There are 3 different sensors, the 50 mpx mainit 50 mpx zoom with 2.5 optical zoom and the 12 mpx wide angle.

However, let’s start with the main proposal, that is, the photos taken in portrait mode, which are the result of the collaboration with lo Harcourt studio of Paris, specialized in portrait photography and which over the years has produced iconic images of the great protagonists of entertainment, particularly cinema.

There are 3 different scenarios that can be used, classic, colour And vibrant. The first two imply that the shots are taken in 5:4 modethe same one that the Harcourt studio uses in its works, while the latter shoots with the native size of the sensor, i.e. 4:3.

The result of the portraits is exceptional, even with active zoom, with the subject perfectly isolated from the rest and a very pleasant background blur effect. What is surprising, however, is above all the interpretation of the shadows, in general the reading of the light, which is always extremely precise.

The only problem that occurred during our test was that when using the zoom for portraits, selecting the 2.5X version, sometimes the background does not have the correct blur, which is definitely a bug that needs to be corrected.

But it’s not just a question of portraits, the photos are generally appreciable, in all shooting conditions, even night ones. The only camera that is perhaps not at the top is the wide angle, which produces “normal” images, particularly in night mode, when it tends to produce results that are a little too “soft”.

The main camera and the zoom, however, in night mode guarantee “solid” and good quality results, sometimes with the lights a little overexposed, but still good. The videos are also of good quality, with excellent stabilization.

If we were to look for the classic nitpick, perhaps we could refer to the filters that Honor 200 Pro presents when using the “photo” mode: the “natural” filter gives slightly washed out colors, the one called “authentic” saturates a little too.

ExcellentInstead, the results of the front camera, even in portrait mode. Too bad there is no autofocus, it would have been the icing on the cake.

There drums is another strong point of Honor 200 Pro, thanks to the choice of a Carbon Silicon battery, also called “high density”, thanks to which in the space usually used for a 5,000 mAh battery there is one 5,200 mAhcapable of excellent performance.

In the field, however, the performance is discreet, despite having a very large battery, the instrumental results certify a duration similar to that of many competing products; some even do better, for example Motorola Edge 50 Ultrawhich scores better with much lower capacity.

Honor 200 Pro can boast the charging at 100W, which allows you to go from 0 to 100% in just over 40 minutes, but you need a “proprietary” charger, which is not included in the package. There is also the 66W wireless charging.

Honor 200 Pro it works thanks to the operating system MagicOS 8built on Android 14: user interface and functionality are the same as other models on the market from the same company, there are no particular innovations.

We are talking about software that after some time is still (in graphics) very similar to that of Huawei and therefore familiar to users of both brands, a guarantee for those who do not like to change often and want the security of knowing where to find the various options.

The software doesn’t allow much in terms of AI-related innovations, but it is perfectly compatible with Geminiso much so that by activating Google Assistant it is suggested to adopt the Gemini generative model instead.

There are some proprietary Honor functions, such as the ability to connect all the brand’s devices with extreme ease, from tablets to computers. From his older brother Honor Magic6 Pro also inherits the function Magic Portalto easily transfer images from one app to another.
