A few days before the first Test Match between South Africa and Ireland, respectively first and second in the world rankings, Victor Matfield, former Springboks legend, is setting the stage for the challenge on Saturday 6 July.

Speaker at the program Final Whistle On SuperSport, the former South African second row responded to Sam Warburton’s claims. The Welshman had told the podcast in February Rugby Union Daily of the BBC that the strongest team on the planet was Andy Farrell’s.

Giving support to Victor Matfield, in the same programme, was the former Lions coach Swys de Bruin who repaired the dose towards the former Lions international Dragon.

Test Match: Victor Matflied’s response to Sam Warburton

“I don’t think Warburton has made a final, no, he hasn’t made a World Cup final. He hasn’t reached the semi-final of a World Cup. Now do you want everyone to believe that Ireland, who haven’t reached a semi-final in a World Cup, are the best team in the world when South Africa have won two World Cups in a row?” fired Victor Matfield.

“He (Warburton) has to live in his own world,” concluded the former Springboks second row.

Swys de Bruin couldn’t be more gentle, adding that the Northern Hemisphere media exaggerates the news: “Victor was just explaining the facts.” De Bruin was then asked who the best team in the world is currently, to which he promptly replied: “How can you ask me that? South Africa, Springboks.”

Victor Matfield later expressed concern for Ireland, particularly regarding Leinster and their URC semi-final defeat to the Bulls: “I mean, they (Leinster) come in with 14 of their starting players and they can’t beat the Bulls?”
