Bellingham and Kane save England, Slovakia out Il Tirreno

GELSENKIRCHEN (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – One step away from elimination, England comeback and beat Slovakia 2-1. The British team thus enters the quarter-finals of Euro2024, in which they will challenge Switzerland. After the Slovakian lead scored in the first half by Schranz, the Three Lions managed to equalize in added time in the second half, in the 95th minute, thanks to a spectacular overhead kick from Bellingham, then obtaining the final lead with Kane at the start of extra time.
Electric start to the match, with many fouls and a fragmented but still intense pace in the two thirds of the field. The partial was unblocked in the 25th minute, with Slovakia finding Strelec on the edge of the English area free to serve Schranz, who was good with his right foot to beat Pickford and put his team forward. England tries to react but finds many difficulties in organizing its maneuver in the face of a well-organised system like that of Calzona’s men. We go to half-time with few other emotions, unlike the start of the second half, with the beautiful English transition that led to Trippier’s cross from the left and Foden’s subsequent tap in, which would put the ball in the net to make it 1-1 but all in an offside position. Goal disallowed and Slovakia retaining the lead, remaining alert in defense but not lowering its offensive center of gravity. A new chance for the English will come in the 78th minute, with the free kick kicked from the left by Foden and headed by Kane who, however, misses Dubravka’s goal from the center of the area. Southgate’s team came close to scoring, as happened shortly after, in the 81st minute, with Rice charging a right-footed shot from the edge of the area hitting the post. Final forcing by the Three Lions, who on the brink of elimination managed to regain control of the fate of the qualification thanks to Bellingham’s splendid overhead kick which brought the score back to parity in the last action of injury time. We then go to extra time and at the first good opportunity it is England who find the net again, on Eze’s dirty shot which is deflected by Toney’s header and pushed towards goal by Kane. A tactical plot that thus turns into management by the English, with Slovakia, however, coming close to a new equalizer on a deflection into the center of the area by Pekarik who sends the ball high from two steps. Southgate’s team goes to the quarterfinals: no rematch with Italy but a challenge against Switzerland.
