Dutch GP 2024: MotoGP P2 and FP2 Summary

Here is the story of the first part of Saturday morning at Assen, with a summary of the FP2 of Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP

The Saturday morning free practice session at the Tourist Trophy Circuit in Assen ended a few minutes ago. Several twists and turns, some crashes and also some surprising results.

Moto3

In Moto3, the home rider Collin Veijer is in command, who in the very last moments of P2 clocks a 1:39.703 that gives him the new track record. Behind him are Angel Piqueras, who manages to obtain a very positive result despite the chain falling at the beginning of the session, and Ivan Ortolà of the MT Helmets MSI team. The first 3 are very close to each other, as they are separated by only 87 thousandths.

The top 5 are closed by the 2 Davids (Munoz and Alonso), while the remaining places in the top 10 are occupied by Yamanaka, Kelso, Furusato, Fernandez and Lunetta.

Heavy crash for Riccardo Rossi in turn 7 in the first minutes of the session. The CIP team rider is taken away on a stretcher and updates on his physical condition are awaited. At the same time, Filippo Farioli also fell, who like Rossi was unable to continue due to the extensive damage to his vehicle.

Moto2

In the middle class, however, the fastest is not the driver in the photo, but Somkiat Chantra. The Asia team driver in fact dethroned Sergio Garcìa from the top of the timed standings, who was in the midst of a real fight to the last tenth with Aldeguer. Chantra managed to print a 1:35 and 341 in the final stages of the session, with Gonzalez and Canet behind him. Fermìn was instead 4th, thus managing to win the duel with his brand (but not team) teammate Sergio Garcìa Dols, immediately behind him.

Closing the top 10 are Ogura, Arbolino, Alonso Lopez, Vietti and Ramirez.

Bad fall at the end of the session for Xavi Cardelùs, again in turn 7, with the Fantic driver who was then taken to the medical centre. Updates on his condition are also awaited.

In the event of an unfit, the number of riders out for this weekend would rise to 3 after the bad crashes of Salac and Roberts yesterday.

MotoGP

In the premier class, Bagnaia still leads the timed classification. The Ducati standard-bearer precedes Maverick Vinales, Pedro Acosta and his future teammate Marc Marquez. Martìn is 5th at 5 tenths, while Morbidelli, Di Giannantonio, Alex Marquez, Raul Fernandez and Quartararo complete the top 10.

The session was interrupted 12 minutes from the end due to the presence of gravel in Turn 7, where both Marco Bezzecchi and the aforementioned Raul Fernandez crashed. The gravel was reported by several drivers and the race direction therefore decided to stop everything, to allow the marshals to carry out cleaning operations on the track.

Enea Bastianini is out of the 10th with the 13th time, while Binder is only 15th, also preceded by his teammate Jack Miller, who is instead 12th.
