Virimi Vakatawa leaves Bristol Bears after one season

Bristol Bears have confirmed the departure of former France center Virimi Vakatawa after a season in the Premiership. The contract signed in September 2023 with the English team allowed the 1992-born player to relaunch his career, after being forced to retire the year before due to a heart problem.

The ban on playing in Vakatawa concerned France and the transalpine championship. However, a ban that did not absolutely prevent him from being able to play in other countries. After deciding on forced withdrawal, the center subsequently changed its mind and opted for the sensational return.

The agreement with the Bristol Bears allowed the former Les Bleus player – with 32 caps for France – to relaunch himself, making 19 appearances in the Premiership and scoring four tries during the season. However, the signed contract had a duration of one year and has reached its natural expiry.

Meanwhile Virimi Vakatawa has found space for another experience with the Barbarians team that challenged Fiji at Twickenham on 22 June. An opportunity that allowed him to return to the field with Gael Fickou, reforming that pair of centers that made the fortunes of Fabien Galthié’s first France team. The next move in the ex-Bleus’ career has not yet been announced.
