Formula One, Spanish GP 2024: Carlo Ametrano’s report cards

Max Verstappen again. This time not entirely smoothly, but still just him. The Dutchman also won the Spanish GP race ahead of Norris’ McLaren, who started from pole position, and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. Improvements that have also been made in Ferrari but which, considering the performance of the opponents, are not enough. Leclerc finishes fifth ahead of the host Carlos Sainz sixth. However, that’s not how it goes. We need to react and above all understand what lies behind the argument between the two on the track: Leclerc was ahead of Sainz who, however, immediately went to attack the Monegasque, causing a slight contact between the cars. A gesture that did not go down particularly well with Leclerc, who was angry towards the Spaniard considering an agreement stipulated before the start of the race: in the first laps, the tire had to be managed. For Sainz, however, it was already necessary to attack Mercedes. Today we listened to the writer Carlo Ametrano from Stabia, author of the book “Ayrton… forever in the heart” and a great Formula One enthusiast, for our column “A vote for Formula One”. The writer took stock of the Grand Prix held yesterday in Barcelona.
Hi Carlo, before starting with the report card we ask you for a consideration on the race.
“What to say. Verstappen took off again. He won again and as I have always said he will win this other title. Formula Verstappen and Formula Red Bull are back. It must be said that he will never reach out to his teammate: Perez has limits and is unable to help Max.”
First place for Max Verstappen, he’s back. Vote?
“Obviously I’m going to be repetitive. Even if he doesn’t have the best car, he still makes a difference. Score 10 and praise.”
Second place for Lando Norris. Vote?
“They pitted late and lost. I think McLaren will be the second force in the World Championship, after Verstappen. Score 10”.
Third place for Hamilton’s Mercedes. What do you think about it?
“He had a great race. With the updates, Mercedes has been reborn. I think he can try to win some races. Score 10”.
Fourth place for George Russell. Vote?
“An excellent driver pair, this result also proves it. He maintained his position and was consistent. Score 8”.
Fifth instead for Leclerc. What do you think about it?
“Anonymous. There was a mix-up between them: they said big words to each other. There’s no feeling, I’ve always said that. Rating 6, but it deserves 4”.
Sixth place for Sainz. How do you rate his race?
“Same thing as Leclerc. There is a really bad situation. Zero feeling. Rating 6, but for him too it would be a 4”.
What about Piastri’s seventh position?
“He too could have scored points in his home GP. Better. Rating 6.5”.
Sergio Perez follows. Vote?
“Total disappointment. There’s nothing to say. I don’t know how they renewed his contract, he never helps Verstappen. Absurd. Rating 2”.
What grade do you give to Gasly’s ninth place?
“He did his thing. Let’s hope Alpine can get back on its feet. Rating 6.5”.
What can you tell me about his teammate Ocon’s tenth place?
“One point is always important, it’s not bad. Score 6”.
Carlo, we congratulate you and thank you. Let’s meet our listeners next week for the Grand Prix in Austria. Do you want to update us on your appointments?
“The two of the most important events of my long season are already over. Senna Day was incredible, as was the Roman Motoring Pride held in Rome. Truly incredible: in this regard I thank Stefano Pandolfi, president of the event, for the wonderful welcome he gave me. I would also like to remind you that Senna Day ended. It was fantastic. People came from all over the world. Truly incredible. If I could give a rating I would give it 11. Everything was perfect, everything went great. An exceptional evening. We are not finished yet, however: in addition to this, obviously, we will also have the Minardi Day, unmissable, in the month of August, in addition to my hosting on Thursday evenings on Odeon TV by Filippo Gherardi and Martina Renna who, obviously, I thank as always” .
