first time 2 Italians in the final in 2 grass tournaments

Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti will play tomorrow the 199th and 200th final of the Open Era with an Italian tennis player on the court. The Italian finals of the year thus rise to 8, also including the Australian Open, Cordoba, Rotterdam, Miami, Marrakech and Stuttgart.

We have had two Italian players in two different finals played on the same day (or in any case a maximum of 24 hours apart) 7 times (the one on Sunday 23 June will be the eighth time). And it’s the first time it’s ever happened on grass. Here are all the previous ones:

• 11 July 1976 Adriano lost in the final in Gstaad to Raul Ramirez and Tonino Zugarelli won in Bastad over Corrado Barazzutti.
• On 24 April 1977 Corrado Barazzutti won in Charlotte and Paolo Bertolucci triumphed in Florence over John Feaver.
• On 28 September 1980 Gianni Ocleppo lost the final in Bordeaux to Mario Martinez and Adriano Panatta was defeated in Geneva by Balazs Taroczy.
• On 23 September 2012 Fabio Fognini lost to Martin Klizan in St. Petersburg and Andrea Seppi was defeated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Metz.
• On 23 July 2016 in Kitzbuhel Paolo Lorenzi beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in Saturday’s final and the following day Fabio Fognini beat Andrej Martin in Umag.
• On 22 July 2018 in Umag Marco Cecchinato beat Guido Pella and in Bastad Fabio Fognini beat Richard Gasquet.
• On 24 July 2022 in Hamburg Lorenzo Musetti beat Carlos Alcaraz and in Gstaad Matteo Berrettini lost to Casper Ruud.
