A sprint 25 km from the finish line after asking Gaia Realini to increase the pace and the fifth Italian road race title for Elisa Longo Borghini has become reality.
The Piedmontese champion of Lidl Trek imposed her law by flying towards victory despite an entire group in pursuit of her, a group which, however, was slow to react, got closer up to 30 seconds but then never lowered again, except in the last kilometre, and for Longo Borghini it was a triumph. Completing the podium were Chiara Consonni, competing today with the Fiamme Azzurre shirt, and Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini of the UAE ADQ third and Italian champion among the Under 23s.
THE RACE – The first kilometers after the departure from Bagno a Ripoli were covered with the compact group. Then Elisa De Vallier (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) took the initiative and remained in the lead alone until 35 kilometers from the finish line. A few more kilometers at high speed and then the great push from Lidl Trek which put Longo Borghini on the launch pad. Gasparrini was the only one to try to stay close behind the champion from Ornavasso but then she had to raise the white flag and see the number 1 run away towards the reconfirmation of the Italian Elite women’s title.
