Pickleball, Road to Turin begins: the charge of 2000 (but there’s still room)

Pickleball, Road to Turin begins: the charge of 2000 (but there’s still room)

Now we’re really leaving, and we’re leaving in style, with the record figure of 2000 registrations now approaching. The Road to Turin Circuit, the first national pickleball circuit, starts off on the right foot, with the passion for this new racket sport that takes over Italy from North to South, including the islands. But for all those who wish to participate and take part in the first stage, there is still time and there is still space. The competitions start at 9.30 in the morning, both on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd. Saturday 22nd with the men’s and women’s singles. Sunday with the men’s doubles and the women’s doubles, and with the mixed starting from 12. Individual tournaments start and finish in a single day. And, be careful, it is also possible to register the same morning by 9 am, on site.

“There are three – explains Michelangelo Dell’Edera, director of the Roberto Lombardi Higher Training Institute – the main objectives of these tournaments. One is the competition, because in any case we are talking about events where there will be competitiveness, there will be results at the end of the day, with winners and losers and a ranking that will be updated after each individual stage. Another is training, because the tournaments will see the active participation of the Institute’s teachers, to train participants in the basic rules of pickleball. But the key word will be this: promotion. Because ultimately the main objective is to begin to develop this discipline – through the stages of the Road to Turin – in all Italian provinces. A promotion process that brings together a winning team, made up of a profound and successful synergy between match directors and trustees of tennis, padel and beach tennis, between the organization of the Tpra circuit and the pickleball teachers, with the technicians who they will lend a hand for a positive approach to the development of this sport. In all, we are talking about around 300 people involved in supporting the competitions.”

The Road to Turin which begins this weekend (and which will continue with stages on 20-21 July and then again on 21-22 September) is open to all members and touches all the Italian provinces at the same time. In addition to assigning points to qualify for the great final event which will be held in Turin in November, during the Nitto ATP Finals, this event is an opportunity for racket enthusiasts to try a new, easy and fun discipline.

Furthermore, to entice those who are curious to try, there is a decisive detail: the racket will be provided by the organizers (as well as the balls). It will therefore be enough to bring the federal card and suitable clothing with you to become part of the great world of pickleball and immediately play the first tournament. All FITP members aged under 14 and above, in possession of a competitive or non-competitive tennis, padel or beach tennis card, will be able to participate, without any limit on ranking or ranking history (while waiting for the pickleball card to arrive, within the technical times adequate).

“An introduction to the game – explains Zelindo Di Giulio, pickleball coordinator for FITP – will however be provided to all members by the instructors present, for a review of the rules and as a first moment of training. Tournaments start and end on the same day. In this way, already on Monday we will be able to draw up the first Italian pickleball ranking on the Tpra website”. After the three provincial stages, the regional Masters will be played on 12 and 13 October (singles always on Saturday and doubles on Sunday), and then the best in each region (the quorum will depend on the number of participants) will be promoted to the Masters national team, scheduled in Turin during the Nitto ATP Finals, on the courts set up in the Inalpi Arena village. A golden opportunity, within everyone’s reach.

THE LIST OF THE PROVINCES WHERE THE TOURNAMENTS WILL BE PLAYED

Below is the link to the TPRA portal through which you can register for the races (but it is also possible to do it on site on the same day of the tournament), singles (quite physically demanding) or doubles. But also the list, divided by region, of the places where all of Italy will be able to play pickleball over the weekend.
