Di Canio: “Italy, there are no champions. Spain and Germany at superior speed”

In an interview with The messenger, Paolo Di Canio spoke about Spalletti’s Italy and its chances at the European Championships in Germany: “Italy immediately made us suffer with that foolishness at the start against Albania but thanks to their stubbornness and the lack of resistance from their opponents we started with a good victory. There are no excellent champions in our national team, there are no champions of the past and therefore our coach can make the difference. I am confident as we have already seen against Albania.”

A hard-fought victory.
“Precisely, this is why I say and confirm that it is an Italy without champions capable of deciding matches. I thought the same things that Spalletti then said: a lot of volume of play but little substance. I would add against a poor team, incapable of defending and to dribble. Italy was unable to take advantage of the opportunities and in the end they saved us a rib from Donnarumma, otherwise it would have ended 2-2.”

Is another success like in 2021 impossible?
“I saw Spain and Germany going at a higher speed. We are waiting for the team to grow, thanks to Spalletti, because none of these players can become a phenomenon in a month. Spalletti can’t say it, but we didn’t have the strength to dare because we didn’t have champions”.
