English and Montenegrin football in shock: Matija Sarkicgoalkeeper of Montenegro he was born in Millwall, died at the age of 26. Sarkic’s last international match was on 5 June, a 2–0 defeat away to Belgium. It was his ninth appearance with the Montenegro shirt. This season he had played 32 games in the Championship with Millwall, the club he joined last summer from Wolverhampton.

“We are completely devastated. We offer our condolences to his family and friends. The company is making no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected.”, wrote the London company making the sad announcement on its social networks. The Montenegrin Federation subsequently confirmed that Sarkic’s death occurred due to a sudden illness this morning. The date and time of the funeral and memorial service will be announced later. The Football Federation of Montenegro “expresses its sincere condolences to the Sarkic family.”

Sarkic’s career

He began his career in Anderlecht’s youth team. Then the arrival in England, at Aston Villa. He also played for Birmingham City, Stoke City, Wigan and Wolverhampton, before signing for Millwall last summer. In all he played 63 games in the English Championship, 32 of which in the 2023-2024 season. However, he made nine appearances for the Montenegro senior national team between friendlies and World Cup qualifiers, after having completed the entire youth system.

A life spent in the Premier League, apart from a season with Trabzonspor: from Leyton Orient to Leicester up to Nottingham Forest, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and finally with Cardiff City in 2007.
