Only one other time, again in the Open era, had two Italians reached the top four of the same grass tournament at the same time. It was 2000 and, at the Queen’s Championship, Gianluca Pozzi and Davide Sanguinetti came close to qualifying in the last act: the Apulian lost against Lleyton Hewitt on his 35th birthday while the Ligurian failed to do so against Pete Sampras.
