During today’s appointment with L’Editoriale he spoke on the frequencies of TMW Radio Antonello Valentini. These are his words:
What European do you expect? What can Spalletti’s Italy do? “The favorites are always the same, hosts Germany, France and Spain, then there are some loose cannons because there haven’t been any teams for many years. The European Championships are much more selective than the World Cup, Portugal could come out, I wouldn’t underestimate Belgium. We have to play it with everyone, I’m reasonably optimistic as far as we’re concerned. We are not the favorites and this leads me to think that in 2006 the coach could select 70% of the players in Serie A, the current coach can only select 37%, he can’t work miracles. This must make us reflect on our football, great work is being done at the youth sector level as demonstrated by the results of the national youth teams. The problem is not in the work of the youth sectors but in the choices of the clubs, which are free but questionable choices. I’ll give the example of Lecce which was saved due to the organization it has and not due to a miracle, but last year it won the spring championship with 95% of foreign players. This means that we do not grow and valorise our talents.”
What do you think of Spalletti’s words when he advises young Italians to experience abroad? “Spalletti is right to say that perhaps it is better to go abroad for young Italians, there perhaps they have more courage in launching them and making them play. His reflection is sacrosanct, I didn’t believe that Spalletti could identify so well with the new role of coach. We are talking about the difficulties of scoring goals, but do we want to see the squads of the Serie A teams? Inter with Lautaro-Thuram, Milan with Giroud-Rebic, Napoli with Osimhen-Simeone, Roma with Dybala-Lukaku, if Italians like Raspadori stay on the bench it’s difficult. At that point Spalletti must rely on Scamacca and Retegui, but the problem is structural. We must take note of this solution and try to work to enhance the Italian school system.”
