Joao Almeida wins ahead of leader Adam Yates

Another lap, another one-two, another domination by UAE Emirates. At the end of the sixth, very short stage (just 42.5 km) of the Tour of Switzerland 2024, the winner was Joao Almeida ahead of teammate and general classification leader Adam Yates, who maintains a 19-second lead over the Portuguese in the general classification. Third place instead for Mattias Skjelmose ahead of an excellent Egan Bernal.

Shortened stage which is tackled, as expected, at maximum speed by the runners: in the favorable section preceding the final climb, almost 100 km/h are reached and the first 32.2 kilometers are covered at an average pace of over 60 km /h. On the run they leave Frank van den Broek (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Alexis Renard (Cofidis), Stefan Bissegger (EF Education Easy Post), and Anders Foldager (TEAM Jayco AlUla), but Renard quickly breaks away at the first step.

Van den Broek, Bissegger and Foldager then took the lead with around a minute on the peloton at the foot of the final climb, with Foldager pulling away from the first ramps. Behind it is excellent action by UAE Team Emirates of the gold jersey Adam Yates and from the beginning of the climb the INEOS Grenadiers also worked intensely.

The UAE gets back to work, catches all the escapees and 3.5 kilometers from the end attacks the leader Adam Yates alone: in pursuit of him a trio is formed made up of Almeida, Skjelmose and Bernal. The Colombian himself tries an action, but it doesn’t make the difference. In the final then Joao Almeida emerges and starts, teammate Adam Yates also skips and a UAE double on Blatten’s finish line.
