A decision that comes like a bolt from the blue in Dortmund, even if in recent weeks rumors had begun to circulate about the not totally idyllic climate within the club and in the Borussia locker room around the figure of Terzic. Despite sporting results that in some ways exceeded expectations. In particular, the name of the now former coach has been linked to speculation regarding the future of Mats Hummels, whose contract expires on June 30th and in recent days has also been linked to Italian clubs such as Juventus and Milan. The German press reported that the choice to extend the agreement or not was linked to Terzic’s permanence, which for the world champion with Germany in 2014 would have represented a reason to have a new experience elsewhere.
THE FUTURE OF HUMMELS, THE FATHER’S WORDS
With a video published on his Instagram channel and that of BVB, Terzic took leave of the yellow-black club thus: “It is incredibly painful for me to say this to all the yellow and black fans, but today I part ways with Borussia Dortmund. It was a great honor to win the DFB Cup with BVB and take this fantastic club to the Champions League final. After the Wembley match I asked for a meeting with the club officials, because after ten years at BVB, including five in the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach, I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline. Everyone close to me knows that it has been a very difficult decision for me to make in the last few weeks, but after intense discussions my fundamental feeling has not changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund all the best and this is not goodbye, see you soon. Hello BVB!”.
Edin Terzic, a Borussia Dortmund fan since he was a boy, began his career as a coach among the ranks of the club’s youth sector. After a period – from 2013 to 2015 – as assistant coach to Slaven Bilic of Besiktas and a similar experience from 2015 to 2017 at West Ham, he also worked in Dortmund as an observer and director of the technical area. The first approach to the first team came for three games in December 2020, when he took up the legacy of the sacked Lucien Favre and closed the season by winning the German Cup. He was confirmed at the helm of Borussia Dortmund also for the following year, which ended with the incredible epilogue of the Bundesliga, which saw rivals Bayern Munich overtake for the title in the last round. At the end of the one that ended a few weeks ago, they gained access to the Champions League final – which they had not seen since 2013 – losing against Real Madrid after also eliminating Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final.
