Having grown up in the Eighties, I really can’t stomach the electric car, it really annoys me***oni. Who said this sentence? Marco Mazzoli said it in a new, interesting episode of podcast 2046 with Fabio Rovazzi co-hosting and with guests the CEO of F1 Stefano Domenicali and the singer Francesca Michielin.

The episode in question features among the guests one of the most influential men in the automotive world, precisely Stefano Domenicalipresident and CEO of Formula One Group. The top manager responded to Mazzoli’s statement starting from what is closest to him, F1: “Formula 1 will never become electric, let’s start from this principle. It is already hybrid and probably with sustainable petrol it could go back to being a combustion engine”. Formula 1, therefore, will never overlap with Formula E, which has already made electricity a separate championship; Domenicali instead hoped for a return to “pure” thermal, without any more hybridization, so that F1 itself finds the sounds that made it glorious.

Beyond motorsport, however, what will happen? Domenicali is sure that electric mobility will still exist, but it will happen also accompanied by other solutions: “It won’t be the only way to get around by car”. The reference is probably to what will happen with e-fuels, which from 2035 onwards will allow new internal combustion engines to survive – obviously for those who want or need to purchase that power. Beyond the radical ideas of Mazzoli, who nevertheless framed the cities as the natural habitat of electric cars (“In this context it absolutely fits!”), Domenicali however stated that “electric mobility will obviously continue to grow, little by little, not with the times that have been promised which are unattainable, but it will not be the only mode of movement”.

“The problem” Domenicali continued, “It’s not about whether or not it’s electric, it’s about the fact that the world is growing to such a size that on an energy level it’s hard to think about giving everyone what they need”. Then it was back on e-fuel theme: “E-fuels can already work on thermal engines, you may have less power but you can use it. The goal as F1 is to produce these synthetic petrols that you can use in any combustion car. In this way, the fleet in circulation will be saved, which by 2030 will see 1 billion and 800,000 combustion engine cars”. Then she closed it on the topic: “I’m not against electric, I just want to say that you can’t think of transforming a society overnight with eco-incentives. From a sustainability point of view, eco-incentives have made it possible to change cars with less polluting technologies in order to leave older cars on Earth, given that electric cars still cost too much, 30% more. On the electric side, the automotive industry has now taken that direction, but it will not be the only way of future development, also because the problem of pollution does not only concern cars”.

We have only reported a small part of the podcast, we invite you to follow the episode in its entirety (you can find it below) because it offers many more food for thought on the topic and not only. In fact, there was also talk of the new rules that will change F1 from 2026.
