João Almeida was the best among the men with general classification ambitions in the opening time trial of the Tour of Switzerland 2024. In fact, the Portuguese finished the 4.7 kilometers in fourth place, just over 6 seconds from the best of the day, Yves Lampaert (Soudal-QuickStep). Good indications therefore arrive for the UAE Team Emirates rider, even if they obviously have to be weighed against the brevity of the test held on the streets of Vaduz.
“I felt very good – Almeida’s words – I managed to have a good race and I’m happy with the result. As a team, we did well and we are confident of a good week here in Switzerland. For me this is a key appointment in building the form for the Tour de France 2024 and therefore I am very motivated to do well in this race.”
UAE Team Emirates also recorded fifth place Finn Fisher-Black, but in the Emirates there is also a negative note. It’s the one linked to the young Mexican Isaac del Toro, who fell during the race, during the last kilometre. Del Toro lost 49″ to the winner of the day and, overall, a lot of time compared to all the other men in the rankings. No physical problems, however, for him: the team has already confirmed that he will be at the start of the second stage.
