URC: Imprecise Zebras and concrete Scarlets, the Welsh win in Parma

The last home match of the ducal franchise ends in a defeat without bonuses

The seventeenth round of the United Rugby Championship was not lucky for Zebre Parma. The clash with the Scarlets which could have removed the Italian team from the last place in the standings, ended in favor of the Welsh.

The 32-18 with which Dwayne Peel’s men conquered the ‘Lanfranchi’ was built on mental solidity, a more attentive defense and cynicism in attack on the part of Ryan Elias and his teammates.

The Zebre remained in the game for a long time, showed good things in attack and gave the impression of being able to play on equal terms, but in the end they paid for excessive passivity in the defensive phases.

The Scarlets also managed to earn a bonus point by virtue of the four tries, while for the Zebre the last opportunity to move the ranking is on May 31st in the final match of URC at home to the Glasgow Warriors

The Chronicle of Zebre-Scarlets

The departure of the Zebras is aggressive. In the first three minutes the ducals did nothing wrong, they advanced and took possession of the territory. From an advancing group, Giovanni Licata collects the ball before anyone else and takes it over the goal line for 5-0 which becomes 7-0 thanks to Montemauri’s conversion.

The Scarlets respond promptly. The scrum package is responsible for challenging the Italian defense via direct lines. The Zebras seem quite organised, but they don’t steal enough space from their opponents. So Ryan Elias, primed after a series of pick and go, finds the right opening and closes the gap with a goal of 7 to 5 after 15 minutes of play.

The defensive attitude of the Zebre is once again deficient in the 20th minute when the Scarlets create two off-loads that launch Gareth Davies in the goal. Lloyd’s conversion is precise and the guests take the lead 12 to 7.

The Zebre found concreteness shortly afterwards, when they converted two free kicks conceded by the Scarlets into points. The hosts thus regain the lead at 13 to 12.

The +1 doesn’t last long. The Llanelli team immediately put their noses forward again. The attack of the yellow-blues is predictable, Gareth Davies pounces on a pass from Montemauri, intercepts it and flies between the posts for 13 to 19.

Roselli’s men try to create uncertainty for the Welsh defense, but the Scarlets manage to stem the attacks and the score does not change. In the 40th minute the score went to half-time at 13-19.

Upon returning to the field from the locker rooms, the Zebre conceded their fourth try of the match. The Scarlets attack, centralize the defenders near the breakdown and then release the run of Tomi Lewis who slips between Stavile and Pani for the goal (later converted) of 13 to 26.

In the 52nd minute Gonzalo Garcia wedges himself into the visiting defense following a blocked kick. The Argentine midfielder’s initiative was exploited to perfection by Muhamed Hasa, who smashed in a powerful try for 18 to 26.

The Scarlets are lucid, they manage to establish themselves in the opponent’s half of the pitch every time they have the opportunity. In the 69th and 71st minutes Costelow adds six points to the scoreboard and takes his team further in the score. At the same time, Dominguez gets a yellow card, forcing his teammates to play the last few minutes outnumbered.

In the final minutes there is no more room for any more scoring and the score remains stuck at 18 to 32 in favor of the Scarlets.
