“He’s making progress, in a few days we’ll decide…”

In Italy we are entering the heart of the 2024 Giro. In France, anticipation is rising for the Tour which will precede the Olympics. In Denmark, instead, even if there are no races scheduled, you are experiencing something very importantespecially in view of the Grande Boucle. Jonas Vingegaard, in fact, winner of the last two editions of the French race, he started cycling again with the aim of experiencing a difficult recovery in view of the Grand Depart which will take place in Italy.

Let’s take stock of the situation on the conditions of the champion native of Hillerslev. The standard bearer of the Visma-Lease a Bike team he crashed disastrously on April 4 in the Tour of the Basque Country with notable consequences: fractures to the ribs, clavicle and even a pneumothorax. After almost two weeks in hospital and a period of rest, Jonas Vingegaard he got right back on his bike. Exactly one week ago.

To explain his feelings and above all his perspectives more accurately, he intervened his trainer Tim Heemskerk to the Danish newspaper BT. “The dream of the third Tour? It is not yet in the archive. Jonas responds to training very quickly. He is already making progress, but a decision on participation in the Tour will be made in a few days.”

The trainer then goes into the specifics of the work that the Dane is carrying out: “He’s doing light resistance training right now. We have to realize that he has lost a bit of form after being in hospital, he did almost nothing for three weeks. Of course this has an impact on his form, but we also know that he responds very quickly to training. I don’t know if he will be ready for the Tour. The program? Jonas will remain training in Denmark for the next few days too, without therefore the possibility of doing any real climbs.”

“Right now he’s pedaling comfortably at 34-35 kilometers per hourreveals HeemskerkIf it goes well, tomorrow it can be a little better and the day after tomorrow even better. I am always in contact with him. In Denmark he has a physiotherapist and a nutritionist working with him. We are doing everything we can, but without pushing too hard. If in a week things go well then we could also announce his presence at the Tour.”
