LIEG. ELEVEN CÔTES AND A LOT OF EFFORT TO CONQUER THE DOYENNE

LIEG. ELEVEN CÔTES AND A LOT OF EFFORT TO CONQUER THE DOYENNE
Descriptive text here

With its 254.5 kilometers from Liège to Bastogne and back, the Doyenne is the fourth Monument Classic of the year and the last of the Ardennes triptych, after Amstel Gold Race and Freccia Vallone. Also in this edition the route reserves few surprises for the runners, except for some small innovations which we will see. As usual, the runners will start from Place-Saint Lambert in Liège and after 254.5 kilometers (almost four kilometers less than last year) they will return to Liège, after having gone as far as Bastogne, a city which still retains many memories of the Great War.

Despite the numerous climbs in the first hundred kilometres, in this first part of the route we should not immediately expect big differences between the possible favorites and in the first two hours of the race we will witness the classic show of the fugitives, who could reach Bastogne on their own before being recovered by the group. There will be 11 climbs and the first will be the 2.4 km long Côte de Bonnerue at 5.7% after 76.2 kilometers of racing and following, there will be the Côte de Saint-Roch just 1 km long but with gradients that reach 11.2% after 117.3 kilometres. This Côte is much shorter than the first, but almost twice as steep. The favorites of the day, however, will wait to arrive in Vielsalm, almost 150 kilometers after the start, to make the race harder. So twelve kilometers later you will arrive at the foot of the Côte de Mont-le-Soie, 1.7 km long at 7.9% which heralds a decisive phase at La Doyenne.

Shortly after this climb five famous Côtes will arrive in succession in less than forty kilometers starting with the Côte de Wanne, the Côte de Stockeu, the Côte de la Haute-Levée, the Col du Rosier and the Côte de Desnié. None of these climbs are new and the riders know the route well, which has generally remained unchanged. After the Desnié – 1.6 km long at 8.1% – the group crosses a spur and a descent repeating the route they had taken to get to Bastogne. At this point comes the famous one Côte de la Redoute, just 1.6 kilometers long at 9.4% with 220.5 kilometers in the legs and it will be the third to last climb of the day. On this Côte the runners they will turn right three hundred meters before reaching the top and the Côte de Cornémone will immediately follow.

La Rédoute arrives 30 kilometers from the finish and once again could be the supreme judge who will decide who could really win the Decana. Then we arrive at the penultimate roughness with the Côte des Forges, 1.3 km long at 7.8%but soon after it will be there the famous Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons. Some might think that the difficulties will be over at this point, but this will not be the case because we will have to deal carefully with the Valkenrots, which will force the riders to give everything because its slopes reach up to 10%. Once in Boncelles, there are still ten kilometers to go before reaching the finish line, located on the Quai des Ardennes. The last kilometers will be fast and it doesn’t even seem too difficult to imagine a runner like Poagacar or Van der Poel, who will cover the last kilometers of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège alone.
