Last weekend was certainly a turbulent one for Jannik Sinner and his fans. The South Tyrolean tennis player saw his victory in the Master 1000 tournament in Montecarlo “snatched” also due to a serious mistake by the referee. Last Saturday’s defeat in the semi-final against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, then winner of the tournament, he left great consequences and could lead to serious repercussions throughout the world of tennis. The Italian was close to victory but had to give up, in addition to some physical problems, which heavily influenced his performance, and also to the incredible blunder on the part of the match judge who considered a ball to be in that had actually gone out. Sinner didn’t stop the game, making a mistake in hindsight, and thus missed an important chance in the decisive phases of the match. Over the course of the last few days, the controversy over the referee’s error, which according to many is easy to see, has not subsided. If there’s one thing everyone agrees on, it’s that of the inclusion of technology even on the red clay courts of Monte Carlo which up until now had not foreseen it. The use of hawk’s eye to see when a ball has gone out or not. A bit like goal line technology in the world of football.

For many it is embarrassing that it does not exist at this level in tennis. It was thought that the eye of the line judges would be enough but apparently this is not the case, we need to take action as soon as possible with the introduction of technology. After the mistake that happened to Sinner it was decided to make a change: starting from 2025 the Master 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo will also feature live Electronic Line Calling (ELC Live) technology, better known as live hawk’s eye.

Tournament director David spoke about it in the press conference Massey: “Certainly what happened to Sinner it was an accident but I confirm that from next year the tournament will no longer have line judges and we will have a live hawk’s eye to improve the overall quality of the game. As long as the ATP doesn’t change its mind“. There don’t seem to be any more doubts.
