Tour of the Alps, fourth stage: Carr wins, Tiberi third at 48”, everything is at stake in the last stage

The Tour of the Alps group was in shock for a long time after seeing live the terrible fall of the Australian Chris Harper 25 km from the finish on the descent from the Vetriolo pass. At the finish line in Borgo Valsugana (Trento), the city of Matteo Trentin and Daniel Oss, victory went to the British Simon Carr (Ef-Easypost), who had extended his lead on the Vetriolo climb: 45 km of solitary breakaway. Carr had won a stage at the Tour of the Alps also in 2023. He precedes the Australian Michael Storer (Tudor) and the Canadian Ben O’Connor (Decathlon) by 1’19”; at 1’22” Poels ahead of Valentin Paret-Peintre, Antonio Tiberi sixth, leader Lopez eighth. Giulio Pellizzari was ninth at 2’19”, in a small group with Piganzoli. In the standings, Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl Trek) remains in the lead with 38″ on O’Connor and 48″ on Tiberi, Poels and Bardet, Pellizzari eighth at 1’54”. Lazio’s Tiberi, 22 years old, who is aiming for a good Giro d’Italia, gains a place in the rankings. Lopez leaves the group of the green jersey 10 km from the finish on the last difficulty, Colle San Marco, 5 km at 7%, and then also downhill, and can try to reverse the situation tomorrow in the fifth and final stage, Levico Terme-Levico Terme, 118 km and two first category Gpm: 2600 meters of altitude difference. The race is still very open and it will be possible to decide right on the last finish line: it will be a short, spectacular and very intense stage.
