Andrea Vavassori in Barcelona
Andrea Vavassori plays a great first set and doesn’t take advantage of the chance to escape halfway through the second set, then suffering a comeback from Roberto Bautista Agut. This is the summary of the second round match at 500 in Barcelona, where the Turin player, who entered as a lucky loser, was beaten 3-6 6-3 6-1 by the former Spanish top 10. Andrea played with intensity and quality, good at working with his backhand and attacking, not giving pace to his rival. Bautista grew in intensity and deserved the victory, it’s a shame for that unused break point in the second set which could have dashed the Iberian’s ambitions
Vavassori enters the match very well: with his forehand he finds two splendid winners, one on the break point which immediately puts him in command, 1-0. Andrea is good at serving well, working the ball with his backhand and playing linear patterns that do not allow Bautista Agut to activate his forcing with his forehand. The Spaniard doesn’t serve well, the Italian is quick to attack after a deep return. At 4-2, Vavassori responds very well with his backhand, a fast and deep ball that opens the court for the next lunge with his forehand. He has two points for the double break at 15-40, the Spaniard cancels them (an excellent drop) and then also a third thanks to a powerful forehand. At 4-3 Vavassori has the advantage for the first time in his turn of service. He badly misses a smash and concedes a counter-break ball, which Bautista transforms, opening the court very well with his forehand. The set returns to balance at 4 all, with the Spaniard improving in his forehand push and in return. Vavassori’s reaction was excellent: he attacked and took a new break on the second chance. He then closed the set 6-4, winning a complicated game, with some flying errors and saving two break points.
The second set starts in balance and turns in the central phase. Vavassori responds well and varies with his backhand, he has a chance to extend to 2 all, but Bautista plays it well. Unfortunately for Andrea in the next game it is the Spaniard who raises the pace, slips 15-40 and suffers a break on the second chance, for 4-2. He finishes 6-3 Bautista.
At the start of the third set Vavassori had more difficulty managing the pressing of his rival, who had grown into the push. The Italian suffers a break at the start due to a good pass from Roberto and then an error from the baseline on the break point. Bautista has taken control of the game, Vavassori is no longer able to manage the exchange by slowing down with the back and then attacking, he also drops to serve and gives up a service game again. The match effectively ends here, with a great backhand the Spaniard closes the third set 6-1.
