He fell ill during the night between Sunday and Monday in the Lingotto fire station in Turin and died about an hour later at Molinette hospital, where he had been admitted. The man, Samuele Del Minister, was 50 years old and originally from Pescia, in the province of Pistoia: an athlete as well as a firefighter, so much so that his sudden death left many colleagues speechless. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
In a note now, the firefighters of the Pistoia command recall how Del Minister began his journey in the national fire brigade with military service, and then entered permanent service in 2001, precisely at the provincial command of Turin, from which he was then transferred to the command of Pistoia.
For about twenty years he served in the branch office of Montecatini Terme, also in the Pistoia area, specializing in speleo-alpine-river techniques and first aid. He has participated in many emergency phases on the national territory: from the earthquake in L’Aquila, to the Costa Concordia accident on Giglio Island, up to the earthquake in central Italy.
“A firefighter always on the front line – we read again – then the qualification transition to the role of team leader with assignment to the command of Turin: he would shortly return to the provincial command of Pistoia”.
