The huge asteroid 2024 MK also visible from Sardinia.

Is called “2024 MK”, the asteroid that will graze the Earth on the night between June 29th and 30th, with its orbit passing between the Luna and the Terrawhich makes it a potentially dangerous object for the Planet. However, scientists have studied its orbit, realizing that it will not get close enough to Earth to cause alarm. But the asteroid, whose size is estimated at about 500 meters in diameter, will offer those lucky enough to observe it, a unique spectacle.

It will rise at 9.34pm in the constellation of Pegasus – look south –, moving, throughout the night, towards the galaxy Andromeda, and will be at its highest point in the sky at 5:20. 2024 MK will already be high enough to be observed without the disturbance of artificial lights, even in Sardinia, around midnight. Cell phones and small binoculars may not be enough, but with a small telescope the spectacle is guaranteed.

The disturbing delay in discovery.

The asteroid, of an estimated size of 500 meters in diameter, was discovered on 16 June 2024 by the Atlas telescope network, causing great concern about the still ineffective capacity of technologyto identify and monitor the possible presence of space objects dangerous for the Earth sufficiently in advance. The nightmare told in the film Don’t look up with Leonardo Di Caprio is always relevant.
