President Joe Biden gathered with his wife, children and grandchildren at Camp David to figure out how to rein in the anxiety spreading among Democrats. According to the New York Times, his inner circle has reassured him that he will be able to serve the country for another four years and is urging him to stay in the race and continue fighting despite the debacle in the TV debate with Donald Trump. Some members of his clan, however, have privately expressed exasperation with how he was prepared for the event by his staff. One of the loudest voices imploring Biden to resist pressure to quit was his son Hunter Biden, to whom the president has long turned for advice.

Joe Biden’s staff is in the crosshairs of his family and some donors for the preparation of the debate with Donald Trump, where he gave a disastrous performance. Anger among Democrats exploded Sunday when John Morgan, a major party donor, publicly blamed the advisers who handled the preparations for the TV duel, mentioning Ron Klain, Anita Dunn and Bob Bauer by name. “Biden has been deceived for too long by the value of Anita Dunn and her husband,” Morgan wrote on social media. “They have to leave… Today. The deception is serious. It was bad political practice.” In a later interview he explained: “It would be like if you took a boxer who was about to fight for the title and put him in a sauna for 15 hours and then said, ‘go fight,'” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of voters in the United States who think that incumbent President Joe Biden is in a state of mental health that makes him unfit to run again is growing. A survey conducted by CBS after last week’s televised debate with Donald Trump estimates that 72% of the sample of registered voters do not consider Biden in a state of mental health fit to lead the United States. The sample includes many Democratic voters. Among the concerns listed: his state of health, the decisions he might make if re-elected, his ability to actually conduct the electoral campaign. 49% of the same sample thinks the same about Donald Trump. 45% of registered Democrats who responded to the survey, however, said they think the US president should step aside for another candidate.
