The works of the famous architect Ignazio Gardella were recently at the center of an international visit organized as part of the international Master “Architectural and Urban Contemporary Heritage – ARURCOHE” (Erasmus Mundus Joint Master). This visit allowed participants to explore and study two of Gardella’s main works located in Alessandria: the church of Ignazio Gardella in the park of the Borsalino Rehabilitation Hospital and the Gardella Polyclinic, former anti-tuberculosis dispensary, in via Don Gasparolo.

The ARURCOHE Master, a collaboration between the School of Architecture of the University of the Basque Country (Spain), the Department of Architecture and Design of the University of Turin (Italy) and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania), focuses on the protection, conservation and reuse of the urban and built heritage of the 20th century in Europe. The aim of the course is to train young architects capable of enhancing and maintaining the unique identity of European urban places compared to other global contexts.

Led by professors Paolo Mellano and Annalisa Dameri of the Polytechnic of Turin, the master’s participants explored various aspects of Gardelli’s rationalism and discussed the strategies that European cities should adopt to preserve their typology and identity. The visit represented an opportunity to analyze directly in the field the architectural and urban characteristics of these works, thus enriching the academic education of young graduates in architecture from different countries.
