New appeal process for Chiara Appendino for the Piazza San Carlo tragedy: this is the decision of Court of Cassation. The judges of the fourth criminal section accepted the request of the general prosecutor’s office, canceling with postponement the sentence imposed on the former mayor of Turin for recalculate the sentence, reducing it. The former M5s mayor was sentenced to 18 months. Declared “irrevocable” criminal liability for Hanger e Paolo Giordana, former head of the municipality’s cabinet, for all charges (disaster, murder and injuries, all negligently). New process also for Maurizio Montagnese, former president of Turismo Torino. However, he was definitively acquitted with the formula “for not having committed the crime” Alberto Bonzanomanager of the Police Headquarters at the time of the events.
“The Municipality and the mayors cannot continue to be the scapegoat for everythingfrom public safety to smog, for which in a few hours I will have to face a new trial”, these are Appendino’s first words after the ruling by the judges of Cassation: “In fact, from this process it emerges that the only body held responsible for those incidents is the Municipality (and I as Mayor), while all the other institutional subjects involved in various capacities in the organization and management of public safety, namely the Police Headquarters and Prefecture, they were dismissed or acquitted at various levels of trial. It is an imbalance that I struggle to understand and accept.” The grillina then emphasized the need for a confrontation between the political forces and the government, recalling the countless warnings of Anci and the appeal signed by thousands of mayors of all political stripes. Appendino then concluded: “Out of respect for those who lost their lives or were injured that evening, as well as for the institutions that I represented and represent, I have always defended myself in the trial and never from the trial. And today I accept the decision of the Supreme Court but, at the same time, I do not I can hide from you a sense of bitterness”.

As highlighted previously, the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Supreme Court had asked to cancel with postponement the sentence imposed on Appendino and the former head of cabinet in order to recalculate the sentence following the dismissal of the complaints of some people injured in the chaos. Antonio Bonzano, however, had requested the annulment of the conviction against the director of the Police Headquarters on duty that night. We remind you that Appendino was sentenced at first instance and on appeal to 18 months in prison for multiple manslaughter. Same sentence also for Giordana. Bonzano was sentenced to one year and four months, while the police commissioner Angelo Sanna was acquitted.
THE facts of Piazza San Carlo, in Turin, date back to the evening of 3 June 2017. During the screening of the Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid on the big screen there were a series of waves of panic among the gathered crowd. Tragic toll of 1,700 injured and 2 dead.
What caused the chaos was a gang of young criminals who sprayed stinging spray to steal cell phones and necklaces from those present. The members of the baby gang have already been definitively sentenced to over ten years in prison.
