“We cannot ignore the evil intentions and actions of drug dealers and traffickers – they are killers.” Pope Francis said this in the general audience, dedicated to the World Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which occurs today.
Adding some off-the-cuff words to his speech, the Pontiff said in conclusion: “let us also pray for these criminals who spend money and give drugs to young people: they are criminals, they are murderers. Let us pray for their conversion”.
“Having known many tragic stories of drug addicts and their families, I am convinced that it is morally necessary to put an end to the production and trafficking of these dangerous substances”, highlighted Bergoglio. “How many traffickers of death are there, because drug traffickers are traffickers of death, driven by the logic of power and money at any cost! This plague, which produces violence and sows suffering and death, demands from society as a whole an act of courage”, stated Francis, according to whom “a reduction in drug dependence is not achieved by liberalizing their consumption – this is a fantasy – as has been proposed, or already implemented, in some countries. It is liberalized and consumed more “.
