Alarm in Hamburg, one of the ten German cities chosen for the European football championships. In the city crowded with fans, ahead of the Poland-Netherlands match, German police shot a man armed with an ax and a Molotov cocktail near the Reeperbahn. The man hit in the legs
A police spokesperson confirmed that the man was shot in the leg by an officer and is receiving medical attention. Before the events, tens of thousands of Dutch fans had marched through the streets of the St. Pauli district, where the Reeperbahn is located. Initial indications suggest that “there is no connection with football,” the German police spokesman said. According to the reconstruction of the police, the man came out of a pub along a road adjacent to the Reeperbahn with the ax in his hand, ‘shown’ in a “threatening way” to the officers who asked him to put it on the ground. When he refused, the spokesperson added, they hit him in the leg.

A police statement said the man threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an “incendiary device”. The BBC reports it. According to local media reports, the attack occurred around 12:30 local time. The attacker, shot by the police, is said to be in serious condition. There are around 30,000 Dutch fans in the city, and probably a similar number of Polish ones, and there appears to be a good atmosphere before the match, apparently unaffected by the incident.
